Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project

Kimberley Mineral Sands has recently commenced operation of the Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project located near Broome, Western Australia.  MBS has been the lead environmental consultant responsible for obtaining a wide range of approvals to enable construction, commissioning and commencement of operations.

Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project Assistance:

  • Provision of corporate advice and development of environmental approvals strategies.
  • Participation in feasibility and FEED study activities.
  • Equator Principle gap assessments and liaison with project financiers.
  • Scoping and management of baseline studies to support environmental impact assessment.
  • Conducting soil and landform investigations, acid sulfate soil assessment, surface water assessment, waste rock and tailings characterisation.
  • Conducting environmental radiation assessments.
  • Preparing environmental impact assessment documents for State and Federal approvals for the Mine site and export facilities (Derby and Broome).
  • Preparing an Offset Strategy to address impacts on the Greater Bilby.
  • Preparing a Fauna Management Plan to mitigate impacts on the Greater Bilby and Dampierland Goanna.
  • Undertaking environmental risk assessments to support corporate and regulatory agency needs.
  • Preparing Mining Proposal applications.
  • Preparing Mine Closure Plans
  • Preparing Works Approval and Environmental Licence applications.
  • Preparing construction, commissioning and Time Limited Operations completion reports.
  • Preparing Safety Data Sheets for mineral sand products.
  • Stakeholder engagement and community briefings.
  • Managing GIS data relevant to environmental and social aspects of the project.
  • Development of a construction EMP and environmental procedures.
