Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Rehab Plans

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School (BCGS) is a secondary school located in Gelorup within the Shire of Capel, 10 km south of Bunbury town centre.

In December 2010 BCGS was granted approval under Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to clear 2.3 ha of native vegetation for a sporting field at the school premises. In order to offset the impacts of the vegetation clearing on Western Ringtail Possum (Pseudocheirus occidentalis) and White-tailed Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus baudinii and C. latirostris), which are protected under the EPBC Act, approval required the implementation of a Rehabilitation Management Plan (RMP) at Lot 9 on Plan 43302 (12.1 ha property) in Stratham, Western Australia. The rehabilitation areas cover 10.5 ha of the property.

MBS Environmental (MBS) assisted BCGS by revising the original RMP which was implemented between May 2011 and April 2016 but failed to meet all the completion criteria. RMP Revision 2 was developed by MBS in 2017 to satisfy the EPBC 2007/3333 Variation 2016.

After the implementation of RMP Revision 2, biannual monitoring was required to ensure that completion criteria were being met. The monitoring was carried out by MBS between 2017 and 2020.

The methods of monitoring used were:

  • Photo monitoring, that was undertaken from eight permanent locations which were established in 2011.
  • Fence monitoring, which comprised of opportunistic visual inspections of fences and the rehabilitated areas for any sign on livestock access.
  • Vegetation monitoring, which comprised of permanent and random quadrats and belt
    transects.
Before rehabilitation began on Lot 9 - August 2011
After rehabilitation on Lot 9 - November 2020
