The WA EPA has signed a new agreement with the Commonwealth under the EPBC Act that will allow WA to assess proposals on behalf of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth will still make the approval decision under the EPBC Act, but will rely on the WA assessment report. The agreement accredits the EPA’s assessments on:
- Public Environmental Reviews (PERs).
- Assessment on Proponent Information (API-A).
- Clearing permit assessments (under the EP Act).
This applies to proposals that are likely to have an impact on matters of national environmental significance, thus avoiding duplication of assessments. The new agreement will commence on 1 January 2015.
